The helm is based on a find in Ireland and is of a style typically associated with the Galloglass, Irish-Hebridean heavy infantry. The smith, Jeffrey Hildebrandt, has created a masterful replica of this stunning helm. the craftsmanship in the helm is excellent nad the beautiful details associated with the helm, including the russetting, really bring it to life. All the plaudits given to Royal Oak Armoury are well deserved.

I wanted to wait to review it after I used it.. Well now I have used it! not only is it beautiful but wonderful to use and clean, it really does wipe right out. it will easy make a stew for around 10 people. the craftsmanship is amazing. Thank you so much for keeping the old ways alive, and making it possible for reenactors like myself to understand there ancestors a little better.

I contacted RoyalOakArmoury regarding some customizations to the Madeln helm in the length of the eye slits and putting breath holes on both sides of the face plate. Not only was he willing to do this, but at no extra charge and in the same amount of time. Production time was under 2 weeks, which is almost unheard of in the armor market for a piece made from scratch. It actually took longer for it to ship than for him to forge! The helm is great! It is as well made as any other helms I have from European makers. Very solid, no gaps, and the edges of the plates are neatly bevelled. With the padded linen liner it was instantly wearable. I anticipate that this will be a helm I will wear frequently at reenactment events in years to come. I would highly recommend this armourer and I will undoubtedly give him more business.

Just received this helmet, which I purchased as a gift for my (adult) son. Beautiful quality metalwork. Very heavy gauge steel with perfect overall shape and excellent hand-peened riveting. Surface finish is also superb. Overall, an impressive and beautifully crafted piece of work at a bargain price for the quality.
